I installed an old Airtronics system in a plane. It is narrow band and has had a hard life. When charged up it read 5.1 V so I cycled it and came up with 4.8V so I replaced it with a home made 4.8V pack and charged it up 5.8v,cycled again and had 4.2V . I started testing and found the charging plug was wore out and was loose to the pins. I removed the connections and very carefully shrunk them so I had an interference fit. When assembled them I had no resistance to speak of ,so now I found the problem I hope, as it is back on the cycler. But I used the wiring off the old pack so I do not know if it was healthy or not, probably not. So if your pack varies it may be the charge end.
